Overview
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Field and Laboratory Technician to join our team in Victoria, British Columbia.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
Responsibilities
- Provide construction review and quality control/assurance testing for various projects on Vancouver Island;
- Perform laboratory testing of soils, concrete and asphalt;
- Ensure all work conforms to CCIL, ASTM and other company and industry standards;
- Effectively communicate results and observations to clients, contractors and project engineers verbally and in written formats;
- Willingness to contribute to a team environment while working independently and completing assignments with minimal supervision;
- Liaise with project engineers and client site representatives;
- Uphold strong workplace health and safety practices; and,
- Conduct in situ testing of various materials on construction sites, including compaction, concrete and asphalt testing.
Qualifications and Assets
- High school diploma;
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence with an acceptable driving record;
- Proficiency in spoken and written English is required;
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and complete field work in all weather conditions;
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including out-of-town assignments, overtime, weekends and nights as required;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
- Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing);
- Completion of a related post-secondary program in Civil Engineering Technology is an asset;
- Experience carrying out concrete and compaction testing is an asset;
- A CCIL/CSA concrete testing certificate from is an asset;
- An understanding of ASTM and CSA standards is an asset;
- A criminal record check will be conducted; and
- A three-year driver’s abstract and claims experience letter will be requested upon hiring.
Base Salary Range
- $27.50 – $30.00 per hour.
- The posted wage range for this position represents the range for the experience and qualifications noted in this posting.
- The offered wage may be adjusted upward for candidates whose qualifications and experience exceed those expressed in this posting.
- Candidates with less experience and qualifications may be considered at a reduced starting wage.
