Safe water supply dams

Serving the Capital Regional District since the 1970s.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) is the regional government for 13 municipalities and three electoral areas on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. The CRD owns and operates numerous water supply reservoirs throughout the Greater Victoria area, including within the Sooke watershed, the Goldstream River Watershed, and smaller regional water supply systems on several of the Gulf Islands. Some of their dam structures date all the way back to the late 1800s.

Thurber has supported the CRD’s Integrated Services Department since the 1970s. Our services include:

  • Collecting and reviewing monitoring data from dam sites, including piezometric data, seepage weir data, and deformation data
  • Conducting geotechnical investigations
  • Finite element seismic deformation analyses of earth embankments
  • Designing dam upgrades and preparing options assessment reports
  • Participating in formal dam safety reviews
  • Supporting water distribution infrastructure upgrades
  • Preparing design and construction summary reports
  • Completing condition surveys of concrete structures
  • Responding to dam safety concerns on an as-required basis
