Places where people come together: City of Calgary Mainstreets

Revitalizing the heart of established Calgary communities.

The City of Calgary's vision is "a great place to make a living, a great place to make a life", and the Main Streets Program is one way they are working to achieve this vision. The Main Streets Program selected streets that are in the heart of established communities and which serve a variety of uses. The program aims to improve those streets by making them more inviting, safe, attractive, and memorable while laying the groundwork for future development.

Thurber supported the Main Streets projects along 17 Ave SW, 37 Street SE, Bowness/Montgomery NW, and Marda Loop SW involved upgrading existing sidewalks, addition of bike lanes, enhanced lighting, additional trees, and upgraded roadways surfaces and bus stops. The projects are all along busy vehicle and pedestrian corridors.

For each project, Thurber completed a combined geotechnical investigation and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment to evaluate the subsurface soil and groundwater conditions and provide recommendations during the project's design phase. During construction, we conducted environmental soil sampling. We were involved during construction to provide QA/QC inspection and materials testing services.

The Montgomery Main Streets received a CEA Award of Merit for Transportation Infrastructure - Roads, interchanges, airports, and mass transit.
