Overview
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Contract Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training to join our team in Fort McMurray, Alberta. This position will initially be based on a one-year employment term, with potential opportunities for extension or transfer to another Thurber location following one year of employment.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
As our Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training in Fort McMurray, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team. This position will report to the Edmonton Branch Manager and will have support and mentorship from our larger team based in Edmonton, Alberta. Paid accommodations will be provided by the company.
Responsibilities
- Provide construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects;
- Conduct field compaction testing of soils;
- Carry out field concrete testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements;
- Conduct pile construction monitoring for driven steel and cast-in-place concrete piles;
- Liaise with project engineers and client’s site representatives;
- Travel to local and remote construction sites;
- Project management of geotechnical/construction materials testing projects;
- Conduct field drilling programs, construction monitoring or instrumentation programs relating to geotechnical and materials projects;
- Prepare and write proposals, fee estimates, and technical reports as directed by the Branch Manager;
- Coordinate and conduct forensic and field investigation programs;
- Supervise the work of technologists and provide technical direction; and,
- Promote and assist Thurber in supporting the geotechnical practice, and managing client relationships, including business and new client development.
Qualifications and Assets
- Completion of a related post-secondary program in Civil or Geological Engineering;
- Comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments;
- Valid Class 5 Drivers license is required;
- Ability to lift 50lbs to chest height;
- Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites;
- Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required.
- Eligible for membership with APEGA
- Previous work experience in the field of construction materials testing is an asset;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
- Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing); and,
- Criminal Record Check will be conducted; and,
- 3 Year Driver's Abstract and a Claims Experience Letter will be requested.
