Overview
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an Asphalt Laboratory Technologist to join our team in Calgary, Alberta.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
As our Asphalt Laboratory Technologist, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
As our asphalt technologist you will be responsible for Superpave and Marshall HMA and WMA mix designs, asphalt quality control and quality assurance testing in the laboratory.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Performing high and advanced complexity of asphalt materials testing;
- Marshall and Superpave Mix Design testing;
- Marshall and Superpave Mix Compliance testing; and
- Performing calibrations and routine repairs of laboratory equipment.
Qualifications and Assets
In order to qualify for this role, you will have a relevant post-secondary diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field and/or at least three years of progressive related experience working in an asphalt testing laboratory.

Finally, you will also have the following:
- Completion of a related post-secondary program in Civil Engineering Technology is preferred;
- CCIL Asphalt Testing Certification is preferred;
- Experience with City of Calgary and Alberta Transportation Specifications and procedures,
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
- Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing); and,
- Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required.
