Overview
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Construction Materials Engineering Technologist or Technician with 2 to 3+ years of experience to join our team in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
Responsibilities
A Construction Materials Engineering Technologist’s responsibility consist primarily of carrying out field and laboratory assignments relating to geotechnical, environmental and materials testing. More specifically your responsibilities will include:
- Providing construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects;
- Conducting field compaction testing of soils;
- Carrying out construction inspection for various projects;
- Carrying out concrete field sampling and testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements;
- Carrying out asphalt field sampling and testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements;
- Carrying out laboratory testing of construction materials (soil, concrete, and asphalt);
- Ensuring all work conforms to CCIL, ASTM and other company and industry standards;
- Effectively communicating results and observations to clients, contractors and project engineers verbally and in written formats;
- Liaising with project engineers and client’s site representatives; and,
- Travelling to local, and remote construction sites.
Qualifications
To qualify for this role, you must have a relevant post-secondary diploma in Civil Engineering Technology (or equivalent experience), at least five years of progressive field experience, and a valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Finally, you will also have the following:
- Completion of a related post-secondary program in Engineering Technology is preferred;
- Experience carrying out asphalt, concrete and compaction testing;
- Experience conducting pile construction monitoring is an asset;
- Concrete Testing Certificate from CCIL/CSA is an asset;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
- Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing); and,
- Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required.
Additional Information
- A flexible schedule, with the ability to work out of town for extended periods, overtime, weekends and evenings is required;
- Shift work may be required depending on workload and client/project needs;
- Criminal Record Check will be conducted; and,
- 3 Year Driver’s Abstract and a Claims Experience Letter will be requested.
Base Salary Range
- $48,000 - $70,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week.
- The posted wage range for this position represents the range for the experience and qualifications noted in this posting.
- The offered wage may be adjusted upward for candidates whose qualifications and experience exceed those expressed in this posting.
- Candidates with less experience and qualifications may be considered at a reduced starting wage.
