Overview
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Civil Engineering Technician to join our team in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Thurber is a specialized consulting firm with a focus on geotechnical engineering. Our project work includes transportation, large and small infrastructure, natural hazards, development and more. We undertake challenging assignments that can include steep terrain, deep foundations, compressible soils, landslides, contamination, or other complications.
As our Technician, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
- Carrying out laboratory tests within our soils, concrete, and asphalt laboratory;
- Carry out site geotechnical inspections of construction work and materials testing;
- Complete geotechnical drilling investigations including communicating with drilling contractors and logging test holes.
- Conduct in situ testing of various materials on construction sites, compaction testing, and testing of concrete and asphalt;
- Ensuring laboratory equipment is maintained in accordance with specifications;
- Maintaining an organized environment including soil inventory and equipment within a team of laboratory and field specialists;
- Effectively communicating results and observations to clients, contractors, and project engineers verbally and in written formats;
- Liaising with project engineers and client’s site representatives;
- Participate in a collaborative team environment; and,
- Uphold strong workplace health and safety practices.
Qualifications and Assets
- 2 to 5 years of relevant experience;
- Valid Class 5 Drivers license with acceptable driving record;
- Hold a technician/technologist diploma from a recognized college;
- Have experience with laboratory soil testing procedures such Proctor Tests and grain size analyses;
- An understanding of ASTM and CSA Standards;
- CCIL and CSA Certification for soils, concrete, and asphalt would be an asset;
- Ability to lift 50lbs and complete fieldwork in all weather conditions; and
- Willingness to work in a combination of field, lab, and office. Fieldwork is located in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites for extended periods.
