Overview
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Construction Materials Technician to join our team in Calgary, Alberta.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
As our Construction Materials Technician, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
- Provide construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects;
- Conduct field compaction testing of soils;
- Carry out field concrete testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements;
- Conduct pile construction monitoring for driven steel and cast-in-place concrete piles;
- Laboratory testing of field materials;
- Complete geotechnical/environmental drilling investigations including communicating with drilling contractors and logging test holes;
- Install and read down hole instrumentation such as slope inclinometers and piezometers;
- Ensure all work conforms to CCIL, ASTM, and other company and industry standards;
- Effectively communicate results and observations to clients, contractors, and project engineers verbally and in written formats;
- Liaise with project engineers and client’s site representatives; and,
- Travelling to local, and remote construction sites.
Qualifications and Assets
- Completion of a related post-secondary program in Engineering Technology is preferred;
- Experience in the field of construction materials testing is an asset;
- Concrete Testing Certificate from CCIL/CSA is an asset;
- Shift work is required depending on workload;
- Valid Class 5 Drivers license is required;
- Ability to lift 50lbs and complete fieldwork in all weather conditions;
- Flexible schedule, with the ability to work overtime and/or weekends as required;
- Proficiency in spoken and written English language is required; and,
- 3 Year Driver’s Abstract and a Claims Experience Letter will be requested at time of hiring.

- Comfortable with variability in day-to-day tasks;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;
- Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing); and,
- Experience with flying drones.
