Overview
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Junior Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Calgary, Alberta.
Thurber is a specialized consulting firm with a focus on geotechnical engineering. Our project work includes transportation, large and small infrastructure, natural hazards, development and more. We undertake challenging assignments that can include steep terrain, deep foundations, compressible soils, landslides, contamination, or other complications.
As our Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and manage a wide variety of geotechnical projects to meet our client’s needs as well as maintain Thurber’s safety and quality standards.
- Coordinate and carry out field inspection of construction works and material testing of geotechnical materials.
- Coordinating and executing field programs for geotechnical/environmental assessments for infrastructure, foundation design, natural hazards, pipeline routing, etc. Will involve drilling geotechnical boreholes and logging of soils and rock.
- Overseeing installation of geotechnical instrumentation as well as routine monitoring of instrumentation.
- Undertake analysis and design tasks, summarize, review, and interpret laboratory data.
- Prepare and write proposals and technical reports.
- Manage assigned task scope, schedule, and budgets.
Qualifications and Assets
- Post-graduate degree in a geo-engineering discipline such as Civil Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Engineering Geology.
- Between 0-5 years of experience. New Grads welcome to apply.
- Comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments.
- Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites.
- Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required; and,
- Eligible for membership with APEGA and/or EGBC.
Desirable Skills
- Graduate Degree (Masters or higher).
- Experience with various geotechnical software such as SlopeW, SeepW, Flac, Soilvision, etc.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing).
This is a junior level career position and will be comprised of field and office based responsibilities, with opportunities for continued career growth within the company.
