Overview
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer specializing in Tunneling and Trenchless Technologies to join our team in British Columbia Operations. This role could work from Victoria, Vancouver, or Kamloops, depending on the successful candidate’s location.
Thurber is a specialized consulting firm with a focus on geotechnical engineering. Our project work includes transportation, large and small infrastructure, natural hazards, development and more. We undertake challenging assignments that can include steep terrain, deep foundations, compressible soils, landslides, contamination, or other complications.
As our Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
- Geotechnical investigations, structural design, instrumentation and analysis of cut-and-cover, mined and mechanized tunnels;
- Design of temporary portal shoring, including concrete tangent piles, and soil nailing;
- Directionally drilled pipeline crossings design;
- Assessment of stability, surface settlements and damage to structures;
- Preparation of Geotechnical Baseline Reports.
- Evaluation of dewatering, grouting, ground freezing, TBM selection, vibrations due to blasting, seismic design aspects and rehabilitation of old tunnels.
- Provide technical support and leadership on projects and for staff, including conducting technical reviews of calculations and analyses, as well as performing technical analyses where appropriate;
- Provide guidance, and where necessary, support in coordination, preparation of cost estimates, tender submissions, technical documentation, client reports, progress reports, project scheduling / resourcing, and meeting deadlines and budgets on projects;
- Scoping projects and assisting in the preparation of proposals;
- Supporting mentoring, coaching and training of staff;
- Work with the Branch Manager in the development of new business opportunities;
- Establishing, developing, promoting and maintaining relationships with clients;
- Active participation in the field on a project specific basis as dictated by the needs of the project to meet client expectations and project objectives; and,
- Manage projects and lead multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications and Assets
- Completion of a post-secondary degree in Civil or Geological Engineering is required;
- Master’s degree in Geotechnical or closely related field is preferred;
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in the Geotechnical or Geological Engineering field;
- Specialised experience with and in-depth knowledge of Tunneling and Trenchless Technologies;
- Local Canadian experience is required, in particular, experience with local geology and business practices;
- Class 5 Drivers license;
- Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required; and,
- Eligible for membership with EGBC.

This is an intermediate to senior career position and will be comprised of office-based activities with occasional field visits, with opportunities for continued career growth within the company.
Base Salary Range
- $90,000 - $130,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week.
- The posted wage range for this position represents the range for the experience and qualifications noted in this posting.
- The offered wage may be adjusted upward for candidates whose qualifications and experience exceed those expressed in this posting.
- Candidates with less experience and qualifications may be considered at a reduced starting wage.
