Overview
Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Geotechnical or Geological Field Technician to join our team in Edmonton, Alberta.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
As our Construction Materials Field Technician, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
- Provide construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects;
- Conduct field compaction testing of soils;
- Carry out construction inspection for various projects;
- Carry out field concrete testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements;
- Conduct pile construction monitoring for driven steel and cast-in-place concrete piles;
- Laboratory testing of field materials;
- Ensure all work conforms to CCIL, ASTM and other company and industry standards;
- Effectively communicate results and observations to clients, contractors and project engineers verbally and in written formats;
- Liaise with project engineers and client’s site representatives; and,
- Travelling to local and remote construction sites.
Qualifications
- Completion of a related post-secondary program in Geotechnical or Geological field of study is preferred;
- 1-5+ years of work experience in the field of geotechnical investigations or construction materials testing;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and English spoken and written communication skills;
- Concrete Testing Certificate from CCIL/CSA is an asset;
- Will be required to participate in pre-access drug and alcohol testing where required for site work;
- Must be available to work variable shifts based on construction schedules which includes weekends and extended work hours and days;
- Must possess a Class 5 driver license; and,
- Must be able to lift and carry 25 kg at chest height.
Additional Information
- This position would appeal to those who thrive in a fast-paced environment and are able to work effectively in a team;
- You will be required to provide a 3-year driver abstract and a 3-year claims experience letter; and,
- You will be required to obtain a Criminal Names Record Check as required of staff operating Nuclear Densometers in our Edmonton location.
