Overview
Thurber has an entry-level contract opportunity for a Junior Construction Materials Field Technician to join our team in Edmonton, Alberta for the duration of the 2024 field season.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
A Junior Construction Materials Field Technician’s responsibility consist primarily of carrying out field and laboratory assignments relating to geotechnical, environmental and materials testing. More specifically your responsibilities will include:
- Providing construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects;
- Conducting field compaction testing of soils;
- Carrying out construction inspection for various projects;
- Carrying out field concrete testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements;
- Conducting pile construction monitoring for driven steel and cast-in-place concrete piles;
- Carrying out laboratory testing of field materials;
- Ensuring all work conforms to CCIL, ASTM, and other company and industry standards;
- Effectively communicating results and observations to clients, contractors, and project engineers verbally and in written formats;
- Liaising with project engineers and client’s site representatives; and,
- Travelling to local, and remote construction sites.
Qualifications and Assets
- Completion of a related post-secondary program in Engineering Technology is preferred;
- Experience carrying out concrete and compaction testing is an asset;
- Experience conducting pile construction monitoring is an asset;
- Concrete Testing Certificate from CCIL/CSA is an asset;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;
- Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing);
- Proficiency in spoken and written English language is required; and,
- Class 5 driver’s license.
Additional Information
- A flexible schedule, with the ability to work out of town for extended periods, overtime, weekends, and nights is required;
- Shift work may be required depending on workload and client/project needs; and,
- 3 Year Driver’s Abstract and a Claims Experience Letter will be requested.
