Job Description

Our Saskatoon office is currently seeking a Senior Construction Materials Engineer. This position has excellent opportunity for growth within a company that is consistently recognized for the quality of our work and of our people, and for conducting our business with integrity.

Acting as a lead for soils, asphalt and concrete materials engineering, and construction services, this position is a key component in the further development of our Saskatoon office. This senior role will include the development of new business opportunities for the Saskatoon office, mentoring and participating in the development of the group, and developing positive working relationships with other Thurber offices.


  • Continue the ongoing development of our Saskatoon operations by providing direction and mentorship to junior and intermediate staff in materials engineering and construction services;
  • Oversee and complete routine geotechnical investigations;
  • Manage and/or review projects from the proposal stage through to completion, including allocation of budgets, personnel and resources, billing and client relationships;
  • Lead the development and certification of our materials laboratory, including asphalt and concrete;
  • Must be able to participate in business development activities, actively pursuing new business and project opportunities, and generating project leads;
  • Maintain and develop client relations;
  • Maintain technical proficiency, including participation in professional practice groups and organizations;
  • Provide excellent customer service and a commitment to technical excellence;
  • Participate in the preparation and presentation of training programs for our staff;
  • Work collaboratively with other Thurber offices on project related work; and,
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Saskatchewan experience with aggregates, concrete and asphalt mix designs, pavement design standards, and construction practices;
  • Experience with Saskatchewan Highways projects;
  • Registered (or eligible for registration) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS);
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required, and a post graduate degree (in Materials or related discipline) is an asset;
  • 15 years or more of relevant experience in construction materials engineering and testing is preferred; and,
  • Class 5 driver's license and a good driving record.

  • Demonstrated past performance in Project Management;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal and presentation skills;
  • A high level of proficiency with current software applications;
  • Familiar with Federal and Provincial Legislation and Permits; and,
  • Ability to work independently and travel as needed.
