Job Description


The Ottawa office of Thurber Engineering provides high-end geotechnical support to a variety of clients typically in the transportation and infrastructure renewal sectors.  We are looking for an innovative, results-oriented, self-starter to join our team.  Candidates will be creative thinkers, eligible for a professional engineer designation in Ontario, with at least ten years of experience in the consulting geotechnical field and have high standards regarding quality of work.


• Preparation of cost estimates and proposals for a variety of clients and sectors

• Management of geotechnical investigations including subsurface site programs selection of laboratory test regime, interpretation and documentation of results

• Geotechnical analyses of stability, stress, deformation and foundation response utilizing a suite of software routines

• Preparation of concise geotechnical reports complete with pertinent recommendations

• Carry out field inspection of construction works
• Installation and operation of instrumentation including piezometers, inclinometers and survey equipment.  Review and interpretation of instrumentation results

• Management of project schedule and budgets
• Mentoring and development of junior staff
• Progressive interaction with clients


• Degree in Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering with a Geotechnical Specialization
• At least 10 years of progressive experience in consulting engineering
• Eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario

Desirable Skills and Assets

• Graduate degree(s) in Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering with a Geotechnical Specialization is considered an asset

Familiarity with the CHBDC and OPSS gained through past experience on Ministry of Transportation, Ontario assignments

• Past experience on design projects in areas with soft and sensitive clays

• Familiarity with geotechnical earthquake engineering

• A high level of proficiency with current geotechnical software applications
• Valid Ontario Driver’s License, G Level
• Strong technical, oral and written communication skills

• Bilingual language (English/French) skills are an asset
• Ability to work independently in various environments
